1. THIS MONTH’S MEETING

*****************************

WHEN:      Saturday, December 1, 2007

11:30 a.m. Potluck lunch    Fun to follow.

WHERE:     First Congregational Church in Topeka, 1701 SW Collins

WHAT:  Hi, all! It's that time of year again and our Christmas Party this Saturday is rapidly approaching. I haven't heard from very many of you and would like to get a head count for the event. Also, please let me know what food you'll be bringing, if you don't mind.

For those of you who are new to KWI, I also wanted to let you know how this works. Everyone brings a gift -- and it can be anywhere from $5 to $20, whatever works for you -- to donate for our fund-raising raffle. Members buy tickets for $1 and put them in a raffle as each gift comes up. We draw and one person wins that gift. It's a lot of fun -- and some years, you leave with a lot of loot and others, not so much. . . In the spirit of Christmas charity, we won't name names about who keeps winning all the stuff.

Also, please bring a food item. If you'd let me know what you're bringing, I'd appreciate it, so I can make plans if we're a little low on something. I am supplying paper plates, napkins, plastic silverware, cups and drinks.

We are meeting at First Congregational Church in Topeka, 1701 SW Collins. Directions are printed below. When you come in the main doors of the church (which are right off the back parking lot), turn left and you'll see stairs immediately to your left. On down the hallway is an elevator. Go to the basement. If you take the stairs, turn left at the bottom and go to the room at the end of the hallway. If you take the elevator, turn right and go to the doors at the end of the hallway. I will put up signs. We will have access to a microwave and oven, as well as refrigerator, if you should need them.

Plan to be at the church between 11:30 and noon.

Looking forward to seeing you all!

Morgan

Cell (785) 633-6606

Don’t forget Tanzey will have lots of new books to buy for those on your gift list (including yourself).  She will bring bags so you can load up on your goodies.

Directions from Kansas City or Manhattan areas:

Take I-70 to the Gage exit, turning south onto Gage Blvd. You'll travel 15 blocks or so to 17th St. Turn left (east) on 17th and travel to Collins St. You'll see the church on the right-hand side of the street. (A couple of streets before you reach the church, you'll stop at a weird five-way stop intersection -- Oakley St.)

Turn in the back parking lot behind the church. I will put up signs inside the main doors so you can find us in the church. There are several other events going on. Don't let them mug you for your food.

6.  It’s Your Turn

**********************

I am thankful in November, in a way that should be a part of every moment in my life.

My family skates through the year, careening from one thing to the next – soccer, ballet, church, school, housecleaning (some people do, I hear), and on and on. Then the end of October begins the holiday season and, despite crazy chaos, I spend the next two months feeling so grateful.

Grateful that I had time and money to buy and make that funky dragon costume. Grateful my house is warm when frost crunches under my slippers on the way to the newspaper. So thankful I can take a kid with a hacking cough to the doctor and stop to pick up medicine. Grateful every time I buy a Christmas present that I can spend money on frivolity.

Thankful I can sit around a loaded table at Thanksgiving, assaulted by bickering, and watch the evolution of sweet girls into snotty teenagers and participate in the maneuvering for power that defines my family. Thankful for cranberry sticky dishes piled in the kitchen sink (and on the counters and possibly even the floor).

This is the time of year that I immerse myself in being corny, and hokey, and sappy. January 1 will come, and I will return to my usual crabby self. But for now, all parts of my heart feel the prayer we pray at dinner:

For food in a world where many walk in hunger,

For faith in a world where many walk in fear,

For friends in a world where many walk alone,

We thank thee, O Lord. Amen.

Morgan

Memories make what we are.  Dreams make what we’ll be.

7. Upcoming Program Information

**************************************

January is always our edit one. So I would like to do what we did last year. I would like people who want to participate to send me 5 to 10 pages of a manuscript or scene or whatever. Then I will distribute them to other people and get them edits. If they have a chapter that is 12 pages, just send that.. . but not too many extra pages. --Morgan

8. Program Notes

October Program

Write the book of your heart but do your homework first.  We hear so many times that it is important to write what you know and at the same time know your audience and write to your audience.  Is it possible to do both?  Is it necessary to do both?  It might be important to know the trends but it is more important to be able to set a trend.  These were some of the points made by agent Cheryl Ferguson in her presentation.

It takes years to become a professional in most areas.  Time effort and money got you through college and into a profession.  It didn’t happen overnight so don’t expect to become a successful writer over night.  Take the time to learn the industry, study and practice your craft, and learn who you are and what you have to bring to your craft.

We are all a mix of our background, our own personal baggage, and that one unique perspective that belongs to us.  All this comes together as voice and voice is needed to create a great book.  How we create that voice comes from who we are as well as the amount of determination we bring to bear on the project.

Ferguson speaks of listening to your story.  Let it tell you what it needs.  Many times writer’s block is actually the result of taking a wrong turn.  That’s when it’s important to listen to your characters and let them steer you in the right direction.  Books need time to jell so it’s important to sit it on the shelf until you have some distance and then read it again.  Most of the time certain things will jump out at you shouting for a rewrite.

To write that great book is what we all want to do.  That one book that is timeless.  The one we want to read whether it is a genre that is in vogue or out.  Great books like Gone with the Wind and Tolkien’s trilogy.  We all have our favorites.  They’re always a good read whether they’re in style or not.
